  9. His work thus has resulted into exceptional research productivity, bolstered with international recognitions, awards, honours and prestigious fellowships.

Formative Years

His Ph D (Tech) work in Chemical Engineering at the ICT (formerly UDCT) during 1976-80 involved theoretical and experimental analysis of heterogeneous reactions (gas-liquid, gas-liquid-solid, liquid-liquid), which covered chlorination of aqueous phenols and aromatic sulfonic acids; effect of diffusivity on true gas-side mass transfer coefficient; phase transfer catalysis (PTC); gas absorption with instantaneous chemical reaction followed by desorption of the intermediate species. All of these have been published international journal of repute such as Chemical Engineering Science, and Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research. He was the first chemical engineer in the world to have worked on PTC which has been cited in many books and in fact, his research was commercialised during his doctoral days. Thereafter he went to the UK as Leverhulme Fellow at Loughborough University (1980-81) and worked on binary chromatography, and oil blob mechanics. He proceeded to University of Waterloo, Canada as NSERC Fellow and made significant contributions in flow through porous media, flow visualisation and novel oil recovery techniques and biomass conversion (1982-86).

Research Profile in India

After returning to India as Reader in Chemical Engineering at the UDCT in October 1986, he continued to work in oil recovery methods with support from ONGC, which has been patented and also studied coal structure and gasification, fractals and catalysis. He also started consulting with renowned chemical industries. He received a large number of research grants and maintained a very active research group since 1990.

He published a ground-breaking theory with experimental proof on the absorption of chlorine in aqueous alkalis wherein the intermediate hypochlorous acid gas could be desorbed into the gas phase despite stoichiometric excesses of alkali with or without nano-particles; this work is also commercialized in the USA and finds citations in patents (Chem. Eng. Sci, 1983; Can. J. Chem. Eng., 1995).

Pioneering Theory and Experiments

He published the pioneering theoretical and experimental proof of the celebrated phenomenon of inversion in rates and selectivity in Friedel-Crafts reactions, which was debated in literature of leading organic chemists (Tetrahdron Letters, 1993, 1995). This work is seminal. He has introduced new concepts in phase transfer catalysis (PTC) and his research on tri-liquid PTC, the role of omega phase, and cascade engineered PTC is seminal (Langmuir, 2002, Ind Eng Chem Res 1998, Cat Today 2000, J Mol Cat A 2003). He also happens to be the one of most productive researchers in the field of PTC. He has also contributed to the basic work on role of microwave irradiation in catalysis including mathematical modelling (J.Mol.Cat.A,2005). Role of enzymes in conjunction with microwaves has been exploited for separation of chiral pharmaceutical compounds in over 40 papers during 2002-14.

Science and Engineering Accolades

Many of his papers deal with intertwining of chemistry, chemical engineering and material technology. Green Chemistry ( RSC UK) had listed his paper as one of the most influential papers in 2002 and 2004. Now he is appointed as a member of the editorial board of this high impact factor journal (>7.00). He was found to be the topmost scientist in India in the field of catalysis based on SCI database and peer reviewed papers in 2008. He is the only engineer to have figured in top 20 scientists of India as a highly productive and cited scientist with a variety of contributions to research in a survey conducted by CSIR in 2008 and also by DST for their PURSE programme. The hallmark of Professor Yadav’s research is its fundamental analysis with focus on industrial adoption and commercialization. Some of his work has found extensive use in many of India’s chemical manufacturing corporations. He is an active consultant to a number of industries and his research is commercialized.

Novel Functionalized Materials and Multiple Interfaces

His laboratory has reported a series of novel mesoporous solid superacids called UDCaTs, MUICaTs and ICaTs leading to 27 patents. He has devised elegant selectivity engineering principles in multiphase reactions using inert nano particles, new solid superacidic catalysts, multiple liquid phases such as tri-liquid phase transfer catalysis. He also developed novel redox materials, UDCaT-3 (Adv. Synth. Catal., 2008) and silver and platinum based OMS-2 and Fe-TiO2 materials having a number of patents and papers. His group was the first to synthesize a solid superacid called UDCaT-5 having stronger acidity than the hitherto known sulphated zirconia (J. Catalysis, 2004) which was further improved as FLSZ catalyst (J. Catal. 2012). Novel base catalysts have been synthesized and patented and the work has appeared in Catalysis Today (2013), Journal of Molecular Catalysis A: Chem (2012) and Chemical Engineering Journal (2013). Synergism of heteropoly acids and their modified versions has been propagated by his group in a number of industrially relevant reactions. Synergism of heteropoly acids and their modified versions and clays as nano-catalysts was brought out first time in his leading paper in Chemical Communications (1995), which is oft-cited. A large number of papers have emanated in this area.

Cascade Engineered Catalysis

Chemical and allied industry is characterized by several processes involving complex (series and/or parallel) reaction networks in which the selectivity of the desired product is influenced by a number of parameters. There are examples of reactions where the same type of catalyst is used in a series of reactions where the intermediate is reacted with the reactant already present in the reactor or a different reagent is added subsequently wherein there is no need for separation of the intermediate. His laboratory pioneered this concept in the case of industrially relevant phase transfer catalysis for fenvalerate production and solid superacids for bisphenol-A manufacture, wherein the same catalyst used in a single reactor without separation of catalyst or purification stage. The synthesis of bisphenol-A using supported heteropolyacids (HPA) as a sequel to the Hock process used to make phenol and acetone. Cascade engineered multistep reactions along with complex multifunctional catalyst yields required process intensification at molecular level. In cascade reactions the single event triggers the conversion of a starting material to a product that becomes the intermediate reactant for the next reaction resulting in cascade transformations. These reactions also obliviously reduce workup and save capital costs significantly. The multifunctional catalysts required for such reactions possess multi-functionality such as acid, base and metal sites. Reactions occur on these multiple sites in a concerted or sequential manner. Some of the biomass based processes are reported recently (J Mol Cat A: Chem, 2015; ACS Sus Chem Eng 2015).

Novelty of Phase Transfer Catalysis

His pioneering work in liquid-liquid-liquid phase transfer catalysis has several dimensions; theory, practice and modelling using population balances (Chem Eng J, 2012, Appl. Catal. 2012, Chem. Eng . Res. Des. 2012, AIChE J, 2012). A new reactor was designed to study tri-liquid phase catalysis. A novel concept of pseudo-phase transfer catalysis has been proposed (OPRD, 2012). He has also contributed to the basic work on role of microwave irradiation in catalysis including mathematical modelling.

Waste Minimization and Renewable Resources

The practical applications of Yadav’s research range from pharmaceutical to perfumery chemicals as a green concept with waste minimisation. Indeed, this has now been taken to design and development of a novel micro-channel reactor (Green Chem 2014). The use of octahedral molecular sieves as base materials in developing novel mono- and bimetallic catalysts based has been pursued elegantly ( Chem Eng J, 2012; ChemCatChem 2013). Bioglycerol as a renewable source has been valorised using novel catalysts and covered in a series of patents and also published (Ind Eng Chem Res, 2012, 2013; Clean Tech Environ Policy 2012; RSC Cat Sci and Tech 2013). Novel catalysts based on polyurea have also been developed and used under supercritical conditions (J Supercrit Fluids 2011, Ind Eng Chem Res 2013).

Biocatalysis and Pharmaceuticals

Another attributes of his work in last 5 years is the separation of chiral pharmaceutical compounds using enzymes in non-aqueous media and microwave irradiation which has resulted into 21 papers recently in such journals as Process Biochemistry, Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, Journal of Molecular Catalysis B: Enzymes, Enzyme and Microbial Technology, Bioresource Technology, Biomedical Research International, Biochemical Engineering Journal, Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research, International Journal of Chemical Reactor Engineering, Chemical Engineering Research and Design, Chemical Engineering Science, which are all high impact factor journals.

Energy Engineering

In the field of energy engineering a novel hydrogen production technology has been developed based on experiments since 2008 and it has resulted into 5 patents in USA, Canada, UK, Japan, Korea and a pilot scale experiments are going on with the sponsorship of ONGC. Currently work is also in progress on hydrogen storage and heat storage media with ONGC.

Productivity

He has published over 339 international publications in 67 high impact factor international journals. He has also authored/co-authored 3 books (1 in preparation); and holds 75 international patents. His work on sulfated zirconia, heteropoly acids, clays and ion-exchange resins is exceptionally well-recognized and has been cited in over 7600 papers of international repute, including that by Nobel Laureate Ryoji Noyori. Several of his papers are in high impact journals such as Green Chemistry, Chemical Communications, Journal of Catalysis, Advanced Synthesis and Catalysis (all above impact factor of 6), Langmuir, Bioresource Technology, RSC Catalysis Science and Technology, Journal of Molecular Catalysis A: Chemical, , Journal of Molecular Catalysis B: Enzymatic, Applied Catalysis, Chemical Engineering Journal, Journal of Physical Chemistry B, Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research, Catalysis Today, Catalysis Communications, Microporous and Mesoporous Materials.

Professor Yadav has been an active and successful consultant to chemical and allied industries for past 29 years in Mumbai, Pune, Ankleshwar, Hyderabad, Delhi and Vapi and this interaction has led to successful development of technology. In these assignments, the consultations were as a retainer and a few ad hoc basis where 1/3 share was given to the institute, without using the institute’s facilities. His interaction with the industries have benefitted them in terms of process intensification, waste minimization, product and process development. He has completed 70 such assignments.

Specific contributions to new technology development in industry

  1. For PIL-Rubber Chemicals (NOCIL), he developed a pollution abatement technology for carbon disulfide and hydrogen sulfide was elegantly separated to produce a valuable product NaSH at a capacity of 1800 tpa. This is going on since 1989.
  2. Ecofriendly processes were developed for recovery of phenyl acetic acid (360 tpa), methyl acetoacetate (200 tpa), and pivalic acid (300 tpa), and manufacture of pivaloyl chloride (150 tpa), for for Kopran Ltd, a pharmaceutical company, which are commercialized.
  3. With Bombay Oil Industries Ltd., he was involved in the development of new processes for the manufacture of 2,2,6,6-trimethyl piperidinol and anti-markownikoff hydrobromination of α-olefins.
  4. M/s Gwalior Chemical Industries Ltd has commercialized in 2004 a new green technology developed in his laboratory for the production of 10800 TPA of benzyl alcohol from benzyl chloride without the use of alkali with a total recycle of hydrogen chloride, which is also used for the production of alkyl chlorides. These plant capacities are of global size.
  5. During 1970s his Ph. D. work on phase transfer catalysis for the production of benzyl esters was also commercialized in India by Indian Organic Chemicals Ltd.
  6. He published a pioneering theory with experimental proof on the absorption of chlorine in aqueous alkalis wherein the intermediate hypochlorous acid gas could be desorbed into the gas phase despite stoichiometric excesses of alkali with or without nano-particles (Chem. Eng. Sci., Can. J. Chem. Eng.). This has a direct relevance in the manufacture of non-degradable bleaching solutions and powders, and epichlorohydrin. Direct use of this theory and experimental work has been acknowledged and exploited by Dow Chemicals, USA, in April 1998 for setting an epichlorohydrin plant of 200,000 tons/year. This work is also reported as the basis of their two patents.
  7. A new hydrogen producing technology by water splitting is developed and is currently under pre-pilot studies by ONGC.
  8. A technology developed for alternative to DDT has been patented and being on pilot scale by Hindustan Insecticide.
