Department of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology

About Department

The Department of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology (BSBT) is the most recent department established in the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai. The BSBT department was established to formalize and stream-line the biotechnology-based education from ICT as a natural evolution of the pre-existing, DBT-ICT Center for energy Biosciences. The DBT-ICT Center for energy biosciences was established in 2008 at by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) GoI, with primary focus on exploring the biological mechanisms to harness alternative energy options. While maintaining the core research objectives of the DBT-ICT Center, the BSBT department was conceived to leverage on the extensive expertise developed with ICT in this domain, which was whole-heartedly supported by the Department of Biotechnology.

State-of-the-art facility and infrastructure have been created with expertise in several associated domains such as

  • Biomass to liquid fuel technologies
  • Waste-to-Value technologies
  • Biorefinery Development
  • Algal biotechnology and metabolic engineering
